FROM THE CONVENOR

NEWS FROM THE JANUARY COMMITTEE MEETING

A "Thank You" from Stonewall - We delayed sending off our agreed donation to Stonewall until the New Year. We received a prompt acknowledgement from Ben Summerskill, its Chief Executive: "I'm writing to thank you for your generous donation of £75 to Stonewall. Your contribution is of particular importance to us as we have a busy time ahead, with our key priorities for the year ahead including:" (Here follow four paragraphs, dealing with equality at school, in health, in law, at work) "If you have internet access, please do join us on Facebook (www.facebook.com/stonewalluk) and on Twitter (@stonewalluk)) to stay up to date with exciting Stonewall news and events."

We have already put Stonewall's postcards promoting equal marriage on display at in our meeting rooms. If you would like some for your own use, order them on 020 7598 1850 or from www.stonewall.org.uk.

The End of the Year - We enjoyed our Party on 16th December, when nineteen members and two guests were present. A very relaxed atmosphere prevailed. Our thanks go to Kevin for organising Ted, Stuart and Eric into helping him provide the food and drinks, and also to Kevin's partner, Ian, whom those arriving early actually met at long last! Thanks are also due to Gordon for raising £15 for us by selling raffle tickets.

Thirteen members and one guest were in the King's Arms at Heath for our annual Christmas Meal on the 21st. We enjoyed being together in pleasantly old-fashioned surroundings, but quite a few of us found the meal disappointing. One or two have commented that they slept very soundly that night and wondered if this could possibly be attributed to the mulled wine which Timothy and Tony had kindly served to us beforehand at the Old Hall

At our Friday night pre-Christmas meeting, on the 23rd, ten of us entertained each other with the seasonal items we'd brought. Then, on the 30th, there was more mulled wine for fourteen of us, along with mince pies and Derek-from-Kendal's Christmas Cake, with Cheshire Cheese, of course.

News of Members - We think particularly of George, Bernard, Bob and Andrew, whose health has not been of the best in recent weeks. Stuart and Keith T. have both had health scares during January and we sincerely hope that the problems have been solved.

In the middle of January Richard H. told us that he and his partner Sam were about to move to their new home in Knowsley, Merseyside. Richard has been a member since 1987, and we were touched by the kind words he said about LGC. He has been loyally supportive on many occasions and his presence will be missed. We wish him and Sam every happiness in their new home.

On Stage in Huddersfield - Our friend and member Ian R. will soon be once more on stage at the Lawrence Batley Theatre in Huddersfield. This year the Lindley Church Amateur Operatic Society is putting on "Below Stairs" by Trevor Pilling and Alan Lewis. This is a musical comedy, set in 1914, of life in the servants' part of the house. Performances are at 7.15 pm. from Tuesday, 7th to Saturday, 11th February, with a matinée at 2.15 pm on the Saturday.

Some LGC members are planning to be there. To join us, it would be easiest if you booked your seats directly from the theatre on www.thelbt.org / 01484-430-528. Prices range from £7 to £12. However, on Tuesday evening all tickets cost £9 and, for OAPs, there's a reduction of £2 on prices for the Wednesday evening and the Saturday matinée

Outings 2012 - We held our annual planning meeting on 13th January. Almost at the last minute, and taking various points into consideration, we decided that a different structure was needed this time. We hoped that by involving all fourteen members (and one visitor) present more ideas might be forthcoming.

Although many present had no particular interest in planning the outings, they sat through it all quite stoically; but they did miss out on the occasion for social chat that they were expecting. We thank them for their understanding.

We also thank Patrick, our Outings Co-ordinator, for skilfully steering a course around the rocks and through the shallows. With this newsletter we are circulating a list of all the outings arranged, with brief details. A fuller description of each outing will appear in subsequent newsletters. We have prepared the usual wide-ranging programme, but with an increase in the number of mid-week trips.

Remember, though, that it has always been our policy that any member who has a "bright idea" for an event can plan it and host it and have appear in LGC News in time for all members to find out about it.

Bradford "Pride" 2012 - an Appeal - We have received a circular from the Bradford Pride Committee, a copy of which is being distributed with LGC News. Please read it. We will have a collecting box on Friday evenings if you would like to make a donation.

A very Happy New Year to everybody, from all Committee members -

Eric
